3 White-winged Scoters were on Candlewick Lake in northern Boone Co. this morning. They were in a flock of Ruddy Ducks, Buffleheads and some scaup. Also present was a pair of Horned Grebes.

Candlewick Lake is a private, gated community, so general public access is not permitted. You need to obtain a guest pass from a resident if you know one. However, this is a good time of year to keep a look-out on the larger bodies of water in the area for migrating scoters and Long-tailed Ducks. You might check Lake Summerset by looking west from the yellow gate along Best Road (across from the gas station) in the morning when the sun is behind you. I don’t recommend this spot in the afternoon.
