26 May 2011
Male Surf Scoter on 5 acre pond - Macoupin County - Southern edge of Carlinville. Immature male surf scoter confirmed in Macoupin County, Illinois on a rural, 5 acre pond. All male markings clear and photographed, except white patched on forehead and rear of head. But the adult, male markings are clear and photographed.
This male has been on our pond from 21-26 May 2011 (date of report by me).
This siting has been reported on ebird.org

Visited Olson Lake this afternoon and the Surf Scoter is still there. Also saw Gadwall, Northern Shovellers, Black Ducks, and of course plenty of Mallards and Canada Geese.

Tim Young and I were at Rock Cut in the AM on 10/25 and the scoter was still there.

We also had a flyover Pileated Woodpecker. Waterfowl highlights include: 1 Snow Goose, 4 Gadwall, and 1 American Wigeon.

Thanks for the call yesterday regarding the Surf Scoter. I was able to see this life bird at 2:30 pm today and took a few pictures of it. Not sure how to upload them to this website but have posted them to my Flickr account.
