Short-eared Owls at Nygren
Posted by Barbara Williams under Bird Sightings , Nygren Wetlands[5] Comments
We’ve heard a second-hand report that at dusk last evening there were three Short-eared Owls (in addition to the 5 Whooping cranes, Sandhill Cranes and Tundra Swans) seen from the observation platform at Nygren Wetlands.

I am new to this site and not very familiar with the Rockford area. I live in Lake in the Hills.
I have seen a lot of comments about sightings at the Nygren Wetlands. Where is this located?
Thanks!!

$ Short-eared Owls were seen at Nygren last night (11/19) at 4:50-5:10 p.m. Whooping Cranes still present today, but not in the marsh around 11:00 a.m. Best to check around 4:00 p.m. or after, when they return to the marsh for the night. Suspect that they will leave at dawn to migrate further south one of these mornings and not return.

STOPPED IN AT NYGREN MORNING OF 11-19 TO SEE 13 TUNDRA SWAN. CAME BACK ABOUT 2:30 AND WAITED…. BUT IT WAS WORTH WHILE, TO SEE SUCH BEAUTIFUL BIRDS. THE WHOOPERS ARE A GIFT THAT WE MUST BE THANKFUL FOR AS THEY PASS THROUGH OUR AREA. THE SANDHILL CRANES WERE ALSO A TREAT TO SEE, ALONG WITH AT LEAST 4 HAWKS THAT WERE VERY VOCAL FOR A WHILE. 11/21 – fog was heavy but lifted around 7 AM and saw the five Whoopers. Fog returned as the sun rose higher. 100+ Sandhill Cranes, pair of Northern Shovelers but no swans. Heard they flew shortly after 8 AM.
