Further Mississippi Kite sightings
Posted by Larry Balch under Bird Sightings , Mississippi Kites[2] Comments
At this link there is a map showing some recent sightings, as well as significant occurrences in 2008 and 2009. In order to get a better idea of whether we have an emerging colony of kites here in Rockford, it would be helpful if we gathered as many kite sighting reports as possible. You can help by reporting your kite sighting details. If you are not comfortable posting on this site, or adding a comment, you can call one of the following numbers. (If you reach an answering machine, please leave the details, your name, and a way of reaching you in case there are questions.) The numbers are for reports, not for obtaining information on where to find kites. The above-mentioned map should suffice for that.
Thanks for your help.

On 6/23, around 5:00 p.m., Barbara saw 4 kites (3 males and 1 female) perched in a big dead tree immediately W of the intersection of Westchester and Buckingham. It may be that the best time to look for kites is immediately after a rain storm.

Barbara and I saw an adult male perched in the dead branches at the top of a Siberian Elm by the bike rack at Bloom School between 5-6:00 p.m. today. It stayed there throughout our cruise through the neighborhood during the hour we were there.
Around 5:30 p.m., we spotted two other adult males were soaring with, and diving on, a Cooper’s Hawk over the intersection of James and Pelham, behind the School of Medicine. We watched the two kites until they disappeared. Shortly after, we found one male perched in the large dead tree at Pleasant View and Buckingham.
