Christmas Bird Counts
Our annual winter bird census in Winnebago, Ogle and Boone counties improves our understanding of the populations and problems of birds locally and nationwide. Teams and area assignments will be organized in advance of the count dates.  New counters and feeder watchers are welcomed.

Field Trip – Kick Off The New Year

7:00 a.m. Meet at the Johnson house, 6 Johns Woods Drive. We’ll hit a few spots around Winnebago County and get year lists off to a great start! We will meet in the Menards parking lot, 1600 W. Lane Rd. (on Hwy 173 near Forest Hills Rd.) near the east end. We will carpool to Milwaukee to bird its north and south shorelines. Field Trip – Eagles and other Birds along the Mississippi River and Lost Mound

Meet in the Farm and Fleet parking lot at 4725 W. State St. We will then drive to Savanna to find birds along the Mississippi River. Trip will include a tour of the interior of Lost Mound. Leader – Anne Straight at 815/938-3263

Midwest Sandhill Crane Count
Saturday, April 8, 2017 (two hours from 5:30 to 7:30 in the morning)
This survey helps the International Crane Foundation monitor the abundance and distribution of Sandhill Cranes. In the early morning we watch and listen from carefully selected sites to count calling and displaying Sandhills. 3000 volunteers in 5 states participate in this growing effort. researcher at Sand Bluff Bird Observatory, and photographer, will present “Columbia – More
Birds Than I Could Count ! “. Not that long ago, Columbia, South America, was not open to
tourists from other countries. It is not a huge country, but its unique habitats contain more
species of birds per acre than any other country in the world ! It is not surprising that birders
and photographers are now flocking to Columbia. NCIOS meets monthly and also hosts birding

Field Trip – International Crane Foundation
Saturday, April 22, 2017
7:00 a.m. We will meet in the Menards parking lot (east end), 1600 W. Lane Rd. (on Hwy 173 near Forest Hills Rd.) We will then carpool to the Crane Foundation near Baraboo, Wisconsin. Admission is $7.00 but will be covered for the first 20 people who sign up. Sign up by March 16, 2017. At the Foundation we will receive a guided tour of all 15 of the worlds crane species; learn about crane biology, the current threats to their survival as well as some of the strategies being used to counter these threats, and about the Foundations international work and initiatives.

Illinois Spring Bird Count

This statewide survey gives us a better picture of spring migration and the arrival of breeding birds in Illinois. Our group tries to census birds throughout the county during the day of the count. It’s a big job, but it is the very best time of the year to be out birding. Lots of fun, lots of great birds! New counters and feeder watchers are welcomed. NCIOS and avid birder and photographer, will present “Wildlife of Uganda”. Africa poses the
opportunity to see and photograph unusual species of wildlife that most people only see in
zoos or on t.v. And yes, there are birds, too. Come enjoy his fantastic photos and experiences.

Meeting and Potluck Supper

6:00 p.m. Severson Dells Nature Center
The last meeting of the spring features a potluck supper followed by a business meeting at 7:00 p.m. to finalize the election of new officers for the 2017-2018 Season. Bring a dish to pass, your own tableware and beverage. After the meeting we’ll stroll around the area and look for birds, weather permitting. Bug repellent is a good idea.

NOTE: PLEASE CALL THE LEADER IN ADVANCE FOR THE TIME AND PLACE TO MEET FOR FIELD TRIPS. CAR POOLING IS ENCOURAGED FOR ALL FIELD TRIPS. RIDERS ARE EXPECTED TO REIMBURSE DRIVERS FOR EXPENSES.
