This morning (4/30), John Longhenry called to report that he, Steve Gent and Lee Johnson had discovered 2 Black-necked Stilts at the Howard Farm on IL 70, northwest of Rockford in Winnebago County. The birds were in the pond near the road on the west side of the farm where a small creek goes under IL 70.
I arrived there around 0735 and saw the birds. Larry Balch arrived a short while later, and Mary Kisamore reports that she saw them around 10:00 a.m.
On Saturday seven NCIOS members visited Franklin Creek in Ogle County. 55 species of birds were observed during the morning and early afternoon. Participants were Mary Kisamore, Neil McLaughlin, Kevin Kaltenbach, Russ Cline, Delsie Gavali, Joyce and Jack Armstrong. Notable birds were 4 warbler species- Yellow-Rumped, Palm, Parula, and Northern Waterthrush; Red-headed Woodpecker, Belted Kingfisher, Pileated Woodpecker, Sandhill Cranes, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Eastern Phoebe, House Wren, Winter Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Eastern Towhee, Vesper Sparrow, Purple Finch, and Field Sparrow. Also seen, were American White Pelicans at Oregon Dam on Rock River. Absent and missed were White Throated and White-Crowned Sparrows.
