Winnebago County on October 30

Yesterday, 10/30, I checked Lake Summerset, on Best Road NW of Durand.  Not much waterdowl diversity:  25 Ruddy Ducks, 2 Bubbleheads, 1 Gadwall, and 2 HOrned Grebes in basic plumage. The highlight was 2 Tree Swallows.

On the way home, I stopped by Howard’s farm on IL 70.  Among the 1100 Canada Geese were ~ 20 Cackling Geese, 2 White-fronts, and 4 Snow Geese.  The Snows were apparently a family group consisting of an adult “Blue” morph, an adult white morph, and 2 immature white morphs.

Does anyone have Pine Siskins at their feeders yet?  There are some  reports of them from the Chicago lakefront, plus a Common Redpoll.

They’re moving

Kevin Kaltenbach and I visited BlackHawk Springs Forest Preserve yesterday early in the afternoon. We observed some warblers, tanager, and flycatchers. Black-throated green, Pine, Magnolia, Yellow Rumped, Redstart, Nashville, Tennessee, and Blackburnian Wablers, Yellow throated Vireo, Warbling Vireo, Scarlet Tanager, Phoebe, Eastern Wood Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, many Cedar Waxwings and other birds. Most were moving quickly in the trees and somewhat difficult to catch up with.
