Thanks to an email from Mike Descamps with a very nice photo of a Ross’ Goose, Barbara and I headed up to South Beloit today to check out the old quarry that is now known as Victoria Lake. There are hundreds of Canada and Cackling Geese there and, in with them, is one Ross’ Goose. A very nice bird, but today it was much further out (in the southwest corner of the quarry) than when Mike photographed it yesterday in the northern portion near the gazebo. Here is Mike’s photo:
Also present were 3 Pied-billed Grebes, a Coot, and a drake Common Goldeneye.
We stopped at Nygren Wetlands on the way homne and found a drake Northern Pintail and 2 American Black Ducks, together with hundreds of Canada Geese and Mallards.
